Project Aim

Our development focus over the next 5 years is to have an operational marae. That will require us to;

1. Complete renovations on our whare tupuna.

2. Install all weather access to the marae site and urupa

3. Complete construction of support buildings including wharekai, wharepaku and perhaps a wharemoe

Our marae has completed a Marae Feasibility Study that will inform our full development and renovation of the Marae complex.

4. We will also need to ensure that we promote and/or provide reo training to ensure that we have the skills to meet our tikanga responsibilities.

In this regard the uri of Taharua remain committed to growing and enhancing Te Reo Māori on our marae.

Currently there are:

- 10 people who are fluent in Te Reo Māori.

- 15 people who are conversational in Te Reo Māori.

- 15 people learning Te Reo Māori at our marae.

The aim of this project is to develop a Marae Reo Rautaki that will enhance the use of Te Reo Māori on our marae.

Although not functional as yet, We as the hapū of Taharua have a moemoeā to once again bring our marae alive for our mokopuna to use. We also need to think about how we will take care of the tikanga and kawa based practices needed to ensure our marae is capable of holding its own mana once we are operational.

The marae sees the development of a Reo Rautaki as a crucial part in ensuring that our marae is fully prepared to meet its cultural responsibilities and to also ensure all of its tikanga and kawa obligations can be met.

We are committed to realising these moemoeā, we are working hard to bring our moemoeā to life and this Reo Rautaki will become a crucial part in us as Taharua marae achieving our goals.
Development of the Project

The development of the Project has come about through a collaboration with the Hauraki Māori Trust Board and the marae working towards developing a Strategy that would give the Marae a focus on developing better use of Te Reo Māori moving into the future.

Although the Marae is not currently operational, the moemoeā of the hapū is to work constructively towards reopening the marae in the near future. Over the last few years a lot of mahi has gone into renewing all of the Tukutuku work inside the wharenui with many of the wider whaanui participating and assisting in completing the Tukutuku work.

The uri of the marae are involved in hui and tangihanga currently occurring on other marae in and around Taharua. Many of our tangihanga taking place at Te Pai o Hauraki marae and some at Tirohia marae or Kerepeehi marae.

Taharua marae has a strong commitment to ensuring our mokopuna will have the skills and ability to undertake the tikanga and kawa responsibilities of the marae in future years to come.

Developing and nurturing the growth of Te Reo Māori at our marae has been a long passion of our Kuia and Kaumātua and those tupuna whom have sadly now passed away.

The opportunity to develop a Reo Rautaki for our marae was seen by Marae Trustees as timely and fitting for what our hapū is trying to achieve at our Marae.

This Reo Rautaki will assist the marae in realising our moemoeā once our marae is open and running.

Waiho mā ngā hau e whā hei whakakatea ai te poa i taku whare.

Because my house has become soiled (by internal strife) let the smoking ashes be cleansed by the four winds of heaven.
